Sheila Metzner

Sheila Metzner est née en 1939 à Brooklyn. Connue principalement pour ses photographies de mode, elle a également  réalisé des portraits, des natures mortes et des nus. Tout au long de sa carrière, Sheila Metzner a considéré son travail commercial comme le prolongement de son œuvre personnelle.

Après avoir étudié au Pratt Institute (New York) dont elle sort diplômée en communication visuelle en 1961, elle entre dans l’agence de publicité Doyle Dane Bernbach. En 1966, elle devient la première femme directrice de l’agence. Elle se marie deux ans plus tard avec Jeffrey Metzner, directeur artistique de la même agence. Alors qu’elle est enceinte de son premier enfant, elle confie hésiter à abandonner sa carrière dans la publicité: son mentor et ami, le photographe Aaron Rose, lui conseille de devenir photographe. À ses débuts, son intérêt pour la photographie se développe au cours de ses nombreuses visites au musée Guggenheim de New York, au Metropolitan Museum et dans les galeries de photographies de la ville. Conjuguant son travail de mère et celui de photographe, elle réalise ses prises de vue le jour et développe ses tirages la nuit. 

Inspirée par le travail de Julia Margaret Cameron, femme photographe du XIXe siècle, elle réalise des photographies de son mari et de ses enfants. Sa famille constitue le sujet de sa première exposition, Friends and Family, qui se tient à la galerie Daniel Wolf, à New York en 1978. 

La même année, le directeur du MoMa John Szarkowski sélectionne une de ses photographies, intitulée Eyvan et représentant la fille de son mari. Cette photographie figure dans l’exposition Mirrors and Windows: American Photography Since 1960 qui se tient au Museum of Modern Art de New York, avant de rejoindre les collections permanentes du musée. 

Après avoir travaillé pour Vanity Fair, elle devient la première femme à collaborer régulièrement avec le magazine Vogue dans un contexte où la photographie de mode est alors dominée par des hommes. Alexander Liberman, directeur éditorial à Condé Nast, la soutient dans son travail de photographe et l’envoie réaliser des photographies de mode à l’étranger, notamment en Afrique et en Italie. 

Travaillant pour différentes marques tout au long de sa carrière – Ralph Lauren, Valentino, Fendi – elle photographie également des  personnalités, parmi lesquelles figurent David Lynch, Robert Mapplethorpe, Isabella Rosselini. 

Influencée par l’esthétique pictoraliste pratiquée par Alfred Stielglitz et Edward Steichen au début du XXe siècle, elle utilise pour ses tirages le procédé Fresson qui lui permet de retrouver la texture granuleuse et les effets de flou propres à cette esthétique.
